There are lots of things I love about the summer. Easy, laid-back dressing. An excuse to drink margaritas while the sun is still up and wear way-brighter colors than I normally would. But what do I love absolutely most about July and August? Duh. The sales! Barneys New York is known to treat us to a whopper of a sale about twice a year, and this summer is no exception. If you risk waiting another week – or even a day or two – these staggering steals are likely to elude you. Here are my picks of the bargain bunch (seriously, the deals this year are so good this almost feels wrong).

Thakoon’s intriguing take on the double satchel, a mix of stamped-lizard and suede with a braided strap – might not have made the cut at full price, but at 75% it’s arresting enough to take out for a spin, if only once in a while. With a removable strap and magnetic closure beneath that buckles, it has function in mind. If you love funky, not to mention a killer deal, this has your name written all over it. Thakoon “Rampling” Satchel, $419 (from $1,660).

This tote by Barneys‘ private label has a hint of a McQueen “Novak” feel, but only just a dash – enough to make me fall in love with this everyday basic. Cream canvas is simplistic enough to go with just about anything and sharply graphic leather trip makes it interesting. Barneys New York “Spectator” Tote, $339 (from $850).

Asymmetry all over the place! Jil Sander decided to venture away from minimalist classics, as seen on this leather satchel, half-top zip and half-push-lock closure. This one might be a keeper for the records, and at this price, it’s worth the risk. Jil Sander Half-Frame Bag, $759 (from $1,895).

Helmut Lang’s “Loki” bag rushed on the scene with a storm, with off-kilter accordion style, faint whiffs of Alex Wang, and three compartments so you’re never rummaging around for long. This is an edgy city girl companion and at this price, it perfectly fits the bohemian within. Helmut Lang “Loki” Shoulder Bag, $289 (from $725).

It looks like the “Project Runway” co-hosts share a taste for sleek style, on and off the show. Heidi Klum carried Michael Kors‘ “Gia” bag, a black python version from Pre-Fall 2011, in New York two days in a row last week (you know a celeb really loves a bag when it gets multiple outings!). It just reinforced the fact that his clean and structured tote is all the rage.

This is the day bag you carry if you want to look instantly sharp and polished – it dresses up both Heidi’s flowing maxi and cotton sheath without looking out of place or overdone. Python (or crocodile-embossed leather, which is also available for more pleasant price) is timeless and so is the shape – hard but not stiff and ready to hold all your gear for a day’s worth of errands. It is also the ultimate bag for the modern lady: all-American and all-fabulous.

I love to adorn myself in chic stones – so why shouldn’t I expect my clutches to feel the same way? Sometimes we’re in minimal moods (I’m more of a sleek and simple kind of girl at the end of the day), but every once in awhile there is no denying more is more – precious stones and crystals and beads galore. Here’s a roundup of the top five be-stoned, bejeweled, and bedecked bags of the moment.

1) Fendi Jeweled Stingray Clutch:

Deliciously textured stingray is the skin of the moment. When Fendi does it, by setting it in an angular Art Deco shape with inverted sides, and best of all, nine semi-precious cabochons of different hues, it’s thoroughly lust-worthy. At Neiman Marcus for $4,260.

2) Judith Leiber Python and Pave Crystal Clutch:

Snakeskin looks like a work of art when it’s framed by lustrous ridged silver and a multitude of pave white Austrian crystals. This is strong glamour and potent, not prissy, sparkle. At Neiman Marcus for $1,695.

3) Gucci “Broadway” Jeweled Clutch:

Black satin clutches often have a way of feeling so antiquated (and not in a good way), but the massive, lightning bolt-like cluster of jewels embroidered on this Gucci fold-over clutch packs a razor-sharp punch. At Saks Fifth Avenue for $2,190.

4) Alexander McQueen Feather-Fringe Skull Box Clutch:

Calling all drama queens. Shagreen-embossed nappa leather has been decked out in all kinds of crystal stones, not to mention a theatrical dusting of feathers. A decadent gypsy of a bag. At Neiman Marcus for $2,720.

5) Valentino Embellished Satin Shoulder Bag:

This chain-strap clutch is as delicate as the dainty rose who will likely carry it. Covered in Strass crystals and pearls (my current jewel of choice), with intricate floral and butterfly embellishments along the frame, it ensures that your bag is more bedizened than most women. There are the bags we buy out of necessity, the ones we know will eventually get creased and worn in and eventually pass their prime. This is not one of those bags. Matthew Williamson’s embellished clutch would most certainly fall into the category of the goody bag, a fun and frivolous party topper you purchase to lift your spirits and uplift your cocktail wardrobe.

Bright blue satin (it almost has a periwinkle tint) with a pewter metal frame and absolutely covered in sequins and beads reads like a portable jewel box. With a crisp, matching blue lining it’s cheerful; with a small chain-strap option it’s feasible for a night out. An ornate Art-Deco design like this, thrown off with a modern clasp, is a throwback to hedonistic days of another era, like the cocktail-drenched Roaring Twenties. On Net-a-Porter for $1,610.

Pair with: Now is not the time to shy away from sparkle. Go decadent with the “Scala” mini-dress by Rachel Gilbert, a beaded silk rendition on the flapper classic. On Net-a-Porter for $1,100.

There are bags fit for Bag Snobs and then there are the bags even a Bag Snob cannot justify – as a Bag Snob value is a high priority when making a purchase. We can covet all we want, even salivate at the sight of some of these bags, but as realistic purchases? Not quite. Some expensive bags warrant their mighty price tag, while others, not so much.  But financial savvy does not cure us of our emotional desire. Sure, these bags are unreasonable, but they sure are fun to look at! And you never know – maybe one day I’ll lose my mind and take the plunge.

#5 Alexander McQueen “Byzantine Queen Skull” Crocodile Box Clutch:

Fit for a queen almost sounds like an understatement! Brown crocodile affixed with burnished gold studs and ruby-tone gems makes for a sick bag that looks like it should be behind glass. And for this price, maybe it should (which is why it’s no surprise it’s no longer available). But come on, you can’t beat a skull with red Swarovski crystals eyes wearing its own crown. At least McQueen can see the humor is the preposterous.  Retail price: $9,750.

#4 Chanel Quilted Lambskin Bag:

I remember when I bought my first classic flap for $1,800 – doesn’t that sound measly these days? I don’t care if I sound like an old lady reminiscing on how moving pictures used to cost a nickel.

Chanel’s recent price increases are uncalled for. The house blames the expanding Chinese market place, but who’s looking out for the needs of my expanding wardrobe? Over $3K for the new flap?  I’m gonna pass. And in ten years I’ll hear someone whine that she bought her first Chanel for $3,150 and now it’s $10,000.  Retail price: $3,150.

#3 Zagliani Shiny Python Top-Handle Tote:

Sometimes white can be the saddest color. Sure, pristine python looks great now. But you have to think: almost five grand for a bag that will surely get dirty, and no longer look like you paid five grand for it. Even at $3,000, it would be a hard sell. But, boy, is it beautiful!  Retail price: $4,777.

#2 Bottega Veneta Resina Lambskin “Cobra” Bag:

Bottega Veneta produced a daring piece, a hybrid of caramel python, textured leather, and their famous weave, that was worth all the risk. But they’ve made it unattainable with a price tag that would suggest you’re getting more than just a couple of panels of python.  Retail price: $5,250.

#1 Victoria Beckham Hexagonal Chain Crocodile Bag:

This one for the books (and no matter that it’s no longer available.) A simple crocodile flap bag with a charming chain. For $13,950. Apparently, the crocodile was raised in her backyard as one of her children until she sent it to be made into this.

I’m all for croc and I will pay a pretty penny for one, but why would I buy this and not a Chanel croc for a couple more bucks ($10,000 to be exact)? If you don’t like my logic, then you are totally on the same wavelength as Posh.  Retail price: $13,950.

Painted python with a crosshatch pattern and a matte finish? This is as chic as chic can be. Gemologist and jewelry designer Kara Ross is bringing her precise eye and high taste level to her bags, and this one delivers ultimate ladylike appeal. And, in the spirit of a true jewel snob, 18-karat gold-plated brass hardware.

Innovation like this proves anything can be done with python. This painterly pattern makes the skin look like some outlandish fabric at first look. Then it hits you that it’s even better: black snakeskin with metallic gold and white foil creating the print. The chain-link shoulder strap is removable, so this envelope comes with a clutch option.
